Excellent point made here. Although most SC professionals support the use of technology in addressing SC planning, it is too often expected that the application of a “solution” will solve problems or improve processes. This is the challenge faced by SC professionals today, the involvement of the entire organization in understanding the inputs required and the outcomes expected from the tools of technology. E-mail is a good, basic example of the failure to fully understand the I/O expectations as evidenced by the many long-string messages to complete rather simple “conversations”.
Your statement that “Humans get a lot out of verbal communication” speaks to the inability to codify all the information shared in a true conversation into an algorythm. Technology can collect, share, parse and present data but SC decisions (planning) will always reside in and require input from the SC professional. The basic building block of successful SC planning is two people who collaborate internal to their organizations and share verbally the knowledge gained from that collaboration.
