I came across this article entitled “US military pieces together Afghan supply chain” that, among other things, states “Insurgents, meanwhile, have been attacking overland supply lines into eastern Afghanistan through Pakistan, intermittently closing a pass through which 80 percent of US military supplies enter the country.”
It got me wondering, why doesn’t the military get more recognition for supply chain management excellence? I follow the AMR Supply Chain Top 25 each year which has a pretty thorough methodology for selecting the winners (combination of objective and subjective criteria).
It would be interesting to see AMR do an in-depth review of how the military approaches supply chain management (I apologize if they have and I haven’t seen it – if so, someone please point it out and I’ll reference it here in an update). The challenges that the military faces are daunting and I have to believe there are lessons there for everyone to learn from.
