I just came across and read the article “The Human Side of SCM“. Excellent! I completely agree. My belief is that when you have a vertically integrated, relatively static supply chain, the goal should be to automate as many functions as you can – and that’s what legacy supply chain planning systems were designed to do. However, if you have a globally outsourced, highly volatile/dynamic supply chain, you’ve entered a new era of surprise and compromise that requires frequent course corrections. This requires your supply chain management staff to be alerted to these issues, understand their impact and determine the right compromise and tradeoff to make. To do this, they require tools for collective risk tradeoff and response, because this inherently is a process that requires collaborative response – often including people outside your company at supply chain partners.
