The 21st Century Supply Chain

I believe that the consensus would be in agreement with you that all suppliers would never be considered equal, because of the obvious reasons, i.e. skill sets, value added services, form, fit and functionality.

Yes, but you must also use different methods of communication and collaboration with your suppliers.

The other biggest difference between suppliers starts with attitude. My 45 years of Supply Chain Procurement taught me what a vast gulf separates those suppliers who are only looking out for immediate profit opportunities vs. those who are truly seeking long term value and cost savings for the customer. I’ll go to great lengths to help those who are truly looking out for us. Examples I have written in to a few select contracts include getting Corporate approval for the supplier to use our company name in their advertising based on a written pre-approval, agreements to appear as an endorsing customer at a trade show of their choosing, and written endorsements of the supplier on our company letterhead. That only happens for the few who truly go the extra mile in helping us save millions of dollars.

So true Marv. Its not just about the product they sell is it. Customer service, responsiveness, and interest in a true partnership really differentiate one supplier from another. I’m impressed with your efforts to reward outstanding suppliers.
